Below is our list of workshops for December 2011 to July 2012. As well as our
popular 8 week Patchwork Quilting courses and Stitch-not-Ditch days there is a varied selection of
One Day Workshops to choose from that will be led by the following tutors:

As well as the workshops we shall be hosting Sewing Machine World for two days. They will set up a
demonstration area in our workshop to show the latest offerings in sewing machines
and related accessories.

Please let us know if you want to remain on our Workshop Mailing List; avoiding unnecessary mail costs helps us to maintain good value for money. We shall assume that those booking a course want to remain on the list; those who do not want to book this time but want to remain on the list should confirm this by returning the order form with a tick in the mailing list request box. Likewise, please let us know if you would accept having future Workshop programmes sent to you by e-mail rather than by post.
Booking
Please use the form on page 12 to make your booking and send it or hand it in to the shop.
We will start processing the forms on Tuesday 8th November.
Some of the courses are expected to be oversubscribed and to give everyone a fair chance of getting a place on the workshop(s) they want we will not take bookings or reserve places before this date. On Tuesday 8th we will only deal with the forms we have received by that morning.
We will take further bookings in the shop and by phone from Wednesday 9th November.
Full payment must be made at time of booking by cash, cheque or payment card. Cash or cheques accompanying unsuccessful applications will be returned. Payment Card details will be destroyed.
If you are booking by phone and do not have a payment card we will reserve your place for up to 5 days. If payment has not been received by the end of this time the reservation will lapse and the place may be sold to someone else.
If you should decide to cancel a booking a refund will be made only if we are able to re-sell the place.

Beginners Patchwork and Quilting with Jane Bothamley
Make new friends while learning a new skill! The project for this course is to make a quilt approximately 32 x 46 inches by working on a new technique each week. During the course quilt terminology, template making and other patchwork orientated topics will be covered. Hand sewing in the class but machine sewing will be discussed.

Improvers Patchwork and Quilting with Jane Bothamley
This is the follow on from the Beginners Workshop, or for those who have gained experience elsewhere. Various techniques will be taught during the course and these samples can be made into a quilt if wished or incorporated into a finished product of your choice. Mostly machine sewing (although hand sewing can be used with some techniques if preferred) with rotary cutting. Choose from Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Saturday workshops.

Beginners Dressmaking with Jo Simmonds
If you would love to be able to make clothes but don’t know where to start this is the perfect class for you. Make new
friends while learning a new skill! In a relaxed atmosphere you will learn the skills to make beautiful objects. In the first
week Jo will show you how to make a shoulder bag and by the end of the course you will have made a simple skirt. To
get you started we will even make up kits for the bags with all the materials cut to size. Just come into the shop the
week before the course starts and select the material you would like to use. All you need to bring is a basic sewing
machine and your enthusiasm!

Special Workshops
Felt Mini Wall Hanging with Jane Bothamley
A choice of two designs will be on offer for these mini wall hangings or “Penny Rugs” measuring about 30cm x 40cm each. Using the medium of felt rather than cotton simple motifs are appliquéd onto a background and embellished with embroidery stitches in contrasting colours. Hand Sewing.

Jelly Rolls with Jane Bothamley
Have you seen Jelly Rolls, Bali Pops and Tonga Treats and don’t know what to do with all those 2½ inch strips? This workshop shows you how to make a complete quilt using just these colour co-ordinated strips. Rotary cutting and machine or hand sewing.

Trip Around the World with Jane Bothamley
The construction technique for this quilt creates the traditional design, also known as “Sunshine and Shadow”, without the need to cut and piece hundreds of small squares. Rotary cutting and machine quilting.

Machine Trapunto with Jane Bothamley
If you have tried trapunto work by hand this technique, when sewn on the machine, removes the need to make openings in the back of your quilt. You will be shown how to get striking results using easy time saving methods with your sewing machine.

Crochet Creations - Floral Embellishments with Jen Ramsey
Learn how to crochet buds, flowers and leaves to embellish your clothes, accessories and craft projects. We will be covering all the basics: how to start and end patterns and the most commonly used stitches. There will be lots of different designs for you to choose from and if you have an item ready to embellish please bring it with you. This workshop is aimed at those who have little or no previous experience of crochet but would like to use it to enhance their other needlecraft projects.

Mastering Your Sewing Machine - Part 2 – Quilting with Ruth Jarman
Quilting by machine can be very easy. Learn quick ways to quilt and create fabric that can be used for cushions, waistcoats, linings, jackets, children's clothes and quilts, etc. and give you all the foundation knowledge required to work traditional quilts successfully by machine. Samples include straight stitch, patterns, double needle work and freehand outline quilting techniques including BSR.

Threading your overlocker and adjusting CORRECTLY to achieve a good stitch. Work seams on various weights of woven and all stretch fabrics. Roll hemming, using tape and elastics, sewing knitwear, flat lock seams and decorative edges. Cleaning, maintenance and tension adjustments are all clearly explained.

Zips, Zips and more Zips with Ruth Jarman
If inserting zips is a problem and has been something you still avoid, then this is the class that will cover it all. Insert the perfect cushion zip unlike any before. Master a skirt or dress zip or a simple fly front zip or maybe a wonderful zip pocket that you would find invaluable. Even try your hand at an invisible zip insertion or understand how to undertake a repair. A day full of hints and tips.

Black Work—Red Work with Ruth Jarman
Using cord on the bobbin we can create hand look Blackwork embroidery stitching for use in many ways. Clothing embellishment, Bags, Quilts, Home Furnishings, bed and Table Linen. During the day we will complete 4 table napkins with a prominent design.

Residential Workshop with Ruth Jarman
Make a machine sewn heirloom quilt using a combination of techniques to create a white-work project, including shell-tucks, cross-tucks, pintucks, lace insertion, faggotting, hemstitch and hemstitch appliqué, cut work, insertion gathering, piping and much more. Quilt quickly and easily by machine using a variety of plain and decorative stitch patterns, directional tucks, quilted insertion tucks and fast embellishing methods to assemble in to a 12 – 16 block finished quilt. Includes cutting and piecing quilted squares, laying out, decorative ditch-stitching and bound edges – all by machine.
The workshop will start at 1:30pm on Friday afternoon and finish at 4:00pm on Sunday. Accommodation will be at Melbourne House in nearbyNorth Walsham where there will be provision to continue quilting activities in the evenings. The price includes bed, breakfast and evening meal at Melbourne House and lunch at Wroxham Barns. Transport between the venues will be provided.
If wished this workshop can be reserved by a deposit of £50 and the balance paid over 3 months.

Machine Quilting 2 with Ferret
A one day workshop that focuses on free motion quilting all day. Many quilt patterns will be taught during the day with lots of encouragement to play with different threads. The afternoon will be dedicated to feathers in many forms. There will also be the opportunity to ask for advice on quilting difficult quilt tops.

Woven Wall-Hanging with Ferret
What can you do with fabric when you are bored of piecing and appliqué? You can weave it. A fun class with no sewing but a lot of playing with fabric. In this day class you will cover three different styles of weaving.

Faux Trapunto Flowers with Ferret
These roses will let you try your hand at three different styles of faux trapunto, and in the process make either a small wall hanging or the center piece of three cushions. A machine sewn project suitable for all levels of quilter.

Speed Quilt 3 with Ferret
Speed 3 is based on a log cabin block. It is a great pattern for using up scraps and is easy to scale up or down. During a day class, most students will assemble a lap size quilt, and many achieve far more.

Medieval Magic with Yvonne Brown
Using designs taken from Medieval floor tiles and working with fabric and synthetic felt learn how to create your own unique wall hanging with this intriguing technique which includes a form of reverse appliqué and involves the use of a soldering iron and heat gun! Please note: this is a free-machine technique and a darning foot is necessary.

Come and join Yvonne for a fun day playing with synthetics and soldering irons. She will guide you in an exploration of different ways of using the intriguing cutwork technique to embellish and enhance your creations. The day will also involve a small amount of free machining work.

A day for leaving your inhibitions at home! Today is a chance to experiment with texture and pattern to create your own quilting designs. You do not need to be able to draw to enjoy this class. You will need to bring an object of your choice; something special, something from the kitchen, it’s up to you!

Roman Blinds with Tracey Pitcher
Impress your friends with a smart blind in the window, and the best bit, you can make it yourself! In the class we will make up a sample blind, this will give you all the stages required to create blinds to fit all windows. You will learn to make a lined roman and will be shown different edgings.

Run with it (Markmaking for Design part 2) with Tracey Pitcher
Following on from the markmaking this class will take your ideas and designs and begin to translate them into borders, centres panels or an all over design. You will be shown how to make repeat patterns. We will also discuss scale and colour. Never again will you be afraid to design your own quilts.

Curtain Making with Tracey Pitcher
How to create curtains to professional standard with hand stitched headings. We will start with the basics of measuring the window, allowing for pattern repeat and matching widths. You will learn to mitre corners for hems and stitch in linings. You will go home with a collection of samples and an understanding of how to dress your own home.

Amanda of ‘Monkey Buttons’ (www.monkeybuttons.com) will guide you through the process of making either her ‘Starflower’ or ‘Lesley & Lynda’ cushion from 5 inch charm pack squares. Two cushions can be made from one charm pack. Price includes a copy of the pattern.

Amanda will guide you through the process of making either her ‘Julia’ or ‘Button Box’ bag. Julia is a hexagonal design that can be made from pieced or unpieced material (14” x 11” x 3”). Button Box is made from simple squares embellished with buttons and machine embroidery stitches (15” x 15”). Price includes a copy of the pattern.

Oliver Twist Experimental Day with Fenella Rose
Bring along a picture or photo to use as inspiration for your design and Fenella will show you how to produce your interpretation of it with Oliver Twist threads and any bits and pieces such as lace, silk, beads and buttons that you might have in the bottom of your sewing box. Hand and machine sewing.

Sashiko Quilting with Fenella Rose
Sashiko literally means "little stabs" and is a form of decorative reinforcement stitching or functional embroidery fromJapan. Traditionally used to reinforce points of wear and tear with patches but often now used purely for decorative purposes. Fenella will show you how to mark out a design and teach you some basic Sashiko stitches. Your finished sample could be used as the centre panel for a cushion. Entirely hand sewing.

Wholecloth Quilt with Lilian Hedley
Lilian Hedley is a leading authority on ‘Durham Quilting’ and has a vast knowledge of traditionalNorth Country design techniques. She will guide you through the process of designing and marking out an individual quilt design. By the end of the course you will take home a full scale quilt design marked out on your chosen fabric and tailored to suit your own quilting capabilities. The class commences by looking at a selection of Durham Quilts, some antique and some of Lilian’s own. Learn how to make North Country Quilts without maths and the easy way to draw theDurham‘Running Feather’. How to personalise traditional templates and make them fit any size required. Starting and finishing your design and how to transfer your design to fabric. Setting up and dressing a traditional frame. No previous drawing or designing skills are needed. All templates will be provided.
Lilian has been teaching for us for the last thirteen years and two of the ladies who attended her workshops at Sew Creative have won prizes in theHarrogateshow for their wholecloth quilts.

Half Term Kids Workshops
During the Half-term Holidays in February and June we shall be running some craft workshops for children. The aim is
to encourage youngsters to take up creative hobbies; we hope you will support us by letting family or friends with young children know about them.
All the courses are suitable for girls and boys aged from 10 to 12. Each workshop will start from the basics so no previous experience of the subject is required. We will have one male and one female CRB checked staff running each workshop. The price of the workshop will include all the materials used on the day and a light picnic lunch from the Wroxham Barns Restaurant.

Glider Workshop
Learn how a simple glider works and how to make one with balsa wood and foam. By the end of the day you will have built your own glider and learned how to trim it to fly properly.
