I can’t believe that summer has hardly begun and here we are with the autumn list of workshops. If spring is anything to go by we should be in for a busy summer. It will be good to see our customers from further afield who visit us regularly during the holiday season. If you are unable to visit this year please browse our website www.sewcreativequilts.co.uk this will keep you in touch with all of the beautiful fabrics in stock and quilt kits available. Keep an eye out for new fabric arrivals. We aim to dispatch the same day we receive the order. I hope the new list offers workshops that are of interest to customers both near and far, regular or new. The aim is to try and accommodate all.

TUES. 8TH SEPT. “OVER THE WALL” 10AM – 4PM £25
This is a small panel ( 6” x 4”) of a summer landscape. Techniques include fabric painting, embroidery and simple stumpwork all of which combine to make this attractive little picture. Knowledge of basic embroidery stitches would be useful, but each technique will be explained and demonstrated in clear and easy stages. Tutor Dilys Harvey.

The perfect class for those who have always wanted to try patchwork but did not know where to start. If you feel you can’t put colours together or have no idea how to go about designing patchwork then this is the workshop for you. Jane will guide you through a gentle introduction to basic patchwork, template making and construction of a small sampler quilt. Every stage will be fully explained in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Following on from the very popular Layer Cakes workshop where we had very satisfied participants requesting more!!
A Jelly Roll is a bundle of 2 ½” strips - a Layer Cake is a selection of pre-cut 10” squares. Combine one set of each from the same co-ordinated range and choose from a variety of designs to make a complete quilt top. Rotary cut and machine sewn. Tutor Jane Bothamley.

Make an attractive and useful tote bag in Japanese folded patchwork – a traditional sewing technique from Japan, which involves folding a circle of fabric over a square and incorporating the wadding at the same time. It is very adaptable and can be made using a collection of prints. Each folded patchwork square is a self- contained unit. Hand sewing on day one to make the squares – machine sewing to complete the bag on day two. Tutor Jane Bothamley.

SAT. 26TH SEPT. FLOWER CIRCLE (FOOL-PROOF FRUSTRATION FREE FOUNDATION PIECING) £30
This lovely circular quilt makes a striking table centre or large floor cushion. It can also form the basis of a larger bed quilt. Six foundation pieced flowers are quickly made with Anja’s method of the new fool-proof frustration free foundation piecing technique.
No waste, fits every time, sharp points. Beginners will be amazed at how quickly they get great results with this new way of Foundation Piecing, while anybody who didn’t ‘get on’ with this technique in the past, will now be totally converted. Tutor Anja Townrow.

TUES. 29TH SEPT. MACHINE QUILTING 10.00 AM – 4.00PM £30
Quilting by machine can be very easy. Learn quick ways to quilt and create fabric that can be used for cushions, waistcoats, linings. Jackets. children’s clothes and quilts, etc. and give you all the foundation knowledge required to work traditional quilts successfully by machine. Samples include straight stitch, patterns, double needle work and freehand outline quilting techniques. Work in a hoop and experiment with straight stitch, zigzag and patterns for sewing monograms, cut work and embroidery. Use water-dissolving fabric and learn how to adjust the top and bottom tension when using difficult threads for whip stitch. City and Guilds embroidery in a nutshell! This is the class everyone is talking about! Invisible Machine Appliqué is suitable for all levels of quilters and I promise you will master the technique in one day. You will learn how to produce beautiful appliqué, on your machine, which will demand close inspection to see it was not hand done. This is NOT satin stitch and bonding web but a technique I have taught and used over the past 15 years.. even in my reproduction antique quilts. A truly fun class! Tutor Dawn Cameron-Dick.
SAT. 10TH OCT. MOVING ON WITH MACHINE APPLIQUE 10AM – 4PM £30
Make this appealing floral sample which can be used as the basis of a quilt, panel for a bag, or a cushion. In this class you will learn how to produce a hand done looking Buttonhole or Blanket stitch. Also if your machine cannot do this stitch, then we will perfect a traditional and open satin stitch. Getting your stitch balance correct, turning corners, avoiding “tunnelling” and appropriate threads to use will all be discussed while we make this stunning floral sample. Tutor Dawn Cameron-Dick.

Bead jewellery of all kinds is really fashionable at the moment, particularly accessorized with metal. Chains with dangling beads and charms are everywhere from earrings and necklaces to handbags and mobile phones. Learn to use chain wire with beads to make your own unique jewellery to go with your own outfits, or – with Christmas coming up – for gifts. Tutor Jill Arnold.

By popular request this workshop is a follow on from Stack ‘ n’ Whack 1 but can be treated as a separate class. A simple method for rotary cutting further shapes including flowers and fans whilst still achieving the kaleidoscope effect. If you are one of the many who say “ I love crewel work but I couldn’t possibly do it” then this workshop is for you! Phillipa will cover classic crewel work stitches. Long and Short Stitch as “soft shading”, soft shading around corners, correcting mistakes. Laid and Couched work, etc.as well as “rarely seen stitches”. This workshop is suitable for the beginner as well as the more experienced embroiderer. Stitch with confidence and joy. All levels of experience most welcome You will be supplied with all materials needed for the day, ready printed linen twill, needle and wools . You will need a seat frame if you don’t already have one. We have these available in Sew Creative at a very reasonable price. All you need to bring is a pair of embroidery scissors! Book now. Wacky trees and houses look as though they’ve stepped straight out of a fairy tale – crooked houses, crooked trees with enormous charm. We’ll make blocks which you can use for hangings (great for kids’ rooms), cushions, table mats, bag panels etc. I made a wacky Christmas hanging! Use conventional tree and house colours or go mad with your brightest, craziest fabrics – it works both ways. During this workshop you’ll be creating your own Japanese scene – choose either Mount Fiji or Water Garden with Boat to stitch on the day, and you can take the other design away with you to do at home. The designs are created in stained glass patchwork; it’s an ideal introduction to the technique even if you’ve never tried it before, as during the day we’ll cover everything you need to know. Each design is embellished with a different type of folded flower, and I’ve also added some extra embellishment with machine quilting and beads, but of course these are optional. Nine unique and innovative designs all created by manipulating squares in ingenious forms. Use these designs for quilt blocks, garments, home décor or where ever you wish. Workshop starts with three easy techniques for constructing bags, then students have a chance to choose which of the other bags they wish to make. It is appreciated that students prefer to complete or almost complete their class sample and each class is carefully designed so this should be possible. Quilting by machine can be very easy. Learn quick ways to quilt and create fabric that can be used for cushions, waistcoats, linings. Jackets. children’s clothes and quilts, etc. and give you all the foundation knowledge required to work traditional quilts successfully by machine. Samples include straight stitch, patterns, double needle work and freehand outline quilting techniques. Work in a hoop and experiment with straight stitch, zigzag and patterns for sewing monograms, cut work and embroidery. Use water-dissolving fabric and learn how to adjust the top and bottom tension when using difficult threads for whip stitch. City and Guilds embroidery in a nutshell! This is the class everyone is talking about! Invisible Machine Appliqué is suitable for all levels of quilters and I promise you will master the technique in one day. You will learn how to produce beautiful appliqué, on your machine, which will demand close inspection to see it was not hand done. SAT. 10TH OCT. MOVING ON WITH MACHINE APPLIQUE 10AM – 4PM £30
Make this appealing floral sample which can be used as the basis of a quilt, panel for a bag, or a cushion. In this class you will learn how to produce a hand done looking Buttonhole or Blanket stitch. Also if your machine cannot do this stitch, then we will perfect a traditional and open satin stitch. Getting your stitch balance correct, turning corners, avoiding “tunnelling” and appropriate threads to use will all be discussed while we make this stunning floral sample. Tutor Dawn Cameron-Dick.

This is a small panel (6” x 4”) of a winter landscape. Techniques include fabric painting, layering of shears, embroidery and simple stumpwork, all of which combine to make this attractive little picture. Chains with dangling beads and charms are everywhere from earrings and necklaces to handbags and mobile phones. By popular request this workshop is a follow on from Stack ‘ n’ Whack 1 but can be treated as a separate class. A simple method for rotary cutting further shapes including flowers and fans whilst still achieving the kaleidoscope effect. Long and Short Stitch as “soft shading”, soft shading around corners, correcting mistakes. Laid and Couched work, etc.as well as “rarely seen stitches”. This workshop is suitable for the beginner as well as the more experienced embroiderer. Stitch with confidence and joy. All levels of experience most welcome You will be supplied with all materials needed for the day, ready printed linen twill, needle and wools . Wacky trees and houses look as though they’ve stepped straight out of a fairy tale – crooked houses, crooked trees with enormous charm. We’ll make blocks which you can use for hangings (great for kids’ rooms), cushions, table mats, bag panels etc. I made a wacky Christmas hanging! Use conventional tree and house colours or go mad with your brightest, craziest fabrics – it works both ways. During this workshop you’ll be creating your own Japanese scene – choose either Mount Fiji or Water Garden with Boat to stitch on the day, and you can take the other design away with you to do at home. The designs are created in stained glass patchwork; it’s an ideal introduction to the technique even if you’ve never tried it before, as during the day we’ll cover everything you need to know. Each design is embellished with a different type of folded flower, and I’ve also added some extra embellishment with machine quilting and beads, but of course these are optional. Nine unique and innovative designs all created by manipulating squares in ingenious forms. Use these designs for quilt blocks, garments, home décor or where ever you wish. An excellent class for all fabric manipulators or ‘wannabees’ – no experience – just a desire to tweak and twitch a little. ( All designs 5” square on completion)

Workshop starts with three easy techniques for constructing bags, then students have a chance to choose which of the other bags they wish to make. It is appreciated that students prefer to complete or almost complete their class sample and each class is carefully designed so this should be possible. Class suitable for every level of sewing ability.
