Our exhibition in June will soon be with us and we hope to make a lot of money for the Breast Cancer Resource Fund. Raffle Tickets are for sale in the shop and the first two prizes are two beautiful double bed quilts kindly donated to us by Pauline Elms who sadly lost her battle against breast cancer. Who’s got the most? Be it motivation, inspiration or guidance with a problem, Fenella will be on hand throughout the day to offer helpful advice. Learn the basic techniques of making your own unique earrings and necklaces for your own outfits or for gifts. The day will cover several techniques for earrings and we will look at various methods of stringing necklaces including clasped, thong and multistring necklaces. A SHEER EXPERIENCE 10.00AM – 4.00PM £18 Use sheers, soluable fabrics, synthetics and interesting threads to experiment and produce a small work of art. MASTERING YOUR SEWING MACHINE 10.00AM – 4.00PM £30 Learn how to correctly thread your sewing machine, all about threads, needles, tension setting, sewing straight stitches, zigzag and patterns, machine settings and accessories for seams, edges, hems decorative work and buttonholes. Cleaning, oiling and maintenance explained. Tutor Ruth Jarman. 5TH / 8TH FEB. TUES./ FRI. MACHINE WORKED HEIRLOOM QUILT - 2 day workshop 10AM – 4PM each day only £78 inclusive of all fabrics. Make a machine sewn Heirloom quilt using a combination of techniques to create a white-work project, including shell-tucks, cross tucks, pintucks, lace insertion, faggotting, hemstitching and hemstitched appliqué, cut work, insertion gathering, piping and much more. Quilt quickly and easily by machine using a variety of plain and decorative stitch patterns, directional tucks, quilted insertion tucks, and fast embellishing methods then assemble in to a12 - 16 block finished quilt. Learn quick ways to quilt and create fabric that can be used for cushions, waistcoats, linings. Jackets. children’s clothes and quilts, etc. and give you all the foundation knowledge required to work traditional quilts successfully by machine. Samples include straight stitch, patterns, double needle work and freehand outline quilting techniques. MACHINE PATCHWORK 10.00AM – 4.00PM £30 Learn how to calculate, cut and chain piece for quick machine patchwork. Work blocks of log Cabin, Rail Fence, Roman Stripe and a Nine Patch block creating a simple Irish Chain. All the foundation knowledge you need to begin and an excellent way to get started. Part 1- BERNINA ARTISTA 165 to 185 ONLY- 10AM – 4PM £30 A special class for those lucky enough to have (or want to try) this unique Swiss built electronic sewing machine - all aspects of the machine’s ability will be covered including personal programme, comprehensive understanding of functions, set up, customising the machine and how to appreciate the standard memory. This is a far more informative day course than the one offered by Bernina in London. An opportunity for some of you to repeat the class missed last year. Tutor Ruth Jarman. 22ND FEB. FRI. BOX MAKING DAY 10.00AM – 4.00 PM £25 We will make delightful stitched boxes using craft vilene and fabric – no tubes of messy glue and no cardboard. The boxes – rectangular or circular – are embellished with machine stitching and can incorporate decorative accents such as metallic lace motifs, cord and trimmings and you will be amazed at how rich they can look, reminiscent of some of the elaborate enamelled or decorated caskets of ancient or medieval times. A DAY TO DYE FOR 10.00AM – 4.00PM £18 Come and experiment dying your own fabrics. You will dye natural fabrics and threads so that you can use them in other projects. PUFF THE BABY DRAGON 10.00AM – 4.00PM £18 This most gentle of dragons is approximately 14” tall. The dragon would be appealing to all who see him/her. It can be made more suitable for a small child or adapted for the more grown up. Those who have attended Sarah’s workshops in the past know this will be very popular so book early. Machine needed. Tutor Sarah Slade. 4TH MAR. TUES. REVERSE APPLIQUE WITH A TWIST 10.00AM – 4.00PM £25 Create your own unique medieval hanging using brass rubbings as your design source. The technique involves Reverse and Cut back applique as you “dress” and embellish your chosen figure. Full instructions will also be given to print and paint the background before quilting. Tutor Yvonne Brown. 7TH MARCH FRIDAY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR OUR BAG MAKING DAY TO SELL AT OUR EXHIBITON JUNE 2008 If you are willing to give of your time and have any experience however little in making bags we would appreciate your help on this day to make bags to sell at the exhibition in June. All fabrics will be provided all we need is you and your machine. Last exhibition made nearly £800 on all the bags we had to sell. Could you please help us again? There will be someone to help and guide you along. 8TH MAR. SAT. ALL PUFFED UP 10.00AM – 4.00PM £25 The old fashioned technique of puff patchwork (also known as biscuit” patchwork) is used to create two different items – a traditional quilt and a stylish bag – choose which one you want to make. A modified method of construction is used in place of the traditional way. Plan a co-ordinated colourway or use your collection of scraps. Tutor Jane Hyde. 3 15TH MAR. SAT. WHY NOT MAKE A BAG 10.00AM – 4 .00PM £25 Small bags, large bags, tote bags, gift bags how many bags can you make in one day. MIGRATING GEESE 10.00AM – 4.00PM £25 There are various styles of flying geese which can be incorporated into patchwork and the aim of this workshop is to progress through some of the different types. There is the basic design, which can also be incorporated in a block, plus “circle of geese” and “ribbon of geese”. These two, as their names suggest, are curved designs. Most of the samples are foundation pieced. Basic design techniques for most of the samples are also shown – but do not worry – there is no complicated maths involved. WOODLAND FOXGLOVES 10.00AM – 4.00PM £28 This popular hand applique design features twining stems, leaves and dimensional foxgloves, primroses and violets. It is the cover design for Shirley’s book. The Applique Garden and a photo can be seen on her web-site www.shirlwybloomfield.co.uk The workshop is suitable for confident beginner/intermediate. Part of the design requires a sewing machine. QUILTING WITH DIFFERENCE 10.00AM – 4.00PM £30 Not just surface embellishment and not an embroidery class, during this workshop you’ll explore the use of alternative threads and stitches, sewing traditional or contemporary quilting designs through three layers while adding some textural interest to the surface of your quilt work using Nikki’s ever-popular technique. SAT. “ROLY POLY” LOG CABIN 10.00AM – 4.00PM £30 Make a 24” (large!) Twisted Log Cabin and watch it spiral around this stunning wall-hanging. Once you’ve made one, it will only be a short step to making several more (and you won’t need many – between 6 and 9) to make the Roly Poly quilt. Not suitable for complete beginners. FLORA THE FLOWER FAIRY 10.00AM – 4.00PM £18 This 13” tall doll is suitable for those who have basic sewing skills. She is mainly sewn on the machine with a small amount of hand sewing. Her clothes are an integral part of her body and therefore she could be completed within the day. If ‘faces’ put you off, then do not worry as each part of the doll making process will be covered. OVERLOCK COURSE 10.00AM – 4.00PM £30 Threading your overlocker and adjusting CORRECTLY to achieve a good stitch. Work seams on various weights of woven and all stretch fabrics. Roll hemming, using tape and elastics, sewing knitwear, flat lock seams and decorative edges. Cleaning, maintenance and tension adjustments are all clearly explained. SUMMER BOUNTY 10.00AM – 4.OOPM £30 This hand appliqué workshop features several advanced hand applique techniques such as handling very small pieces, dimensional raspberries and small flowers. It is one of the designs in Shirley’s Book ‘The Appliqué Garden’ Students need to be familiar with needle turned applique and overlays. You will be able to expand your quilting vocabulary by working through a series of stitched exercises to create movement, pattern and texture. Finished pieces of work will be shown so that students can see how the exercises and techniques can be used to create decorative surfaces. This is Lilian’s eighth visit to us and if you would like to take part in the workshop it is advisable to book very quickly. A TASTE OF NORTH COUNTRY QUILTING 10.00AM – 4.00 PM £30 We commence by looking at a selection of ‘Durham Quilts’, some antique and some of Lilian's own. You will learn how to make Durham Templates without maths, the easy way to draw the Durham Running Feather, to design and mark a cushion front, how to set up and ‘dress ‘ a frame, and try your hand at quilting.
